Data benchmarking

What we want to achieve

To support local authorities to:
• Quickly and easily find actionable insights from their own data and from comparing their data to that of other local authorities;
• Enable them to easily share and discuss their insights with colleagues in other local authorities.
• Support a transition to a culture of empiricism and enquiry in the LAs’ work on service improvement, and to bring make the learning What Work component of service improvement a more collective effort.

Who we are working with

We are working with Bracknell Forest Borough Council, and have drawn on expert input from our reference authorities: City of Bradford Metropolitan Borough Council; Newcastle City Council; and Surrey County Council.

What stage we are at now

So far, we have worked with Bracknell Forest to identify an area of children’s social care where improved use of data could be particularly impactful: the front door.
We have established that we can put in place legal and technical mechanisms for accessing the data which are quick, require little time commitment from the LA, and are replicable elsewhere.
We have worked with operational managers, frontline practitioners and the local analysts to identify foci for improvement and specific decisions or processes which can be optimised to deliver the improvement.
We have developed analyses and supporting visualisations - repeatable elsewhere - which help the operational managers to optimise those decisions.
