DIY Evaluation

What we want to achieve

The aim of this work is to develop a support package which to enable local authorities to carry out effective in-house evaluation of change initiatives in children’s social care. This will help local authorities to understand and optimise the impact of the work they do, and generate a grassroots knowledge base about effective ways of working.

Who we are working with

Wigan Metropolitan Borough Council.

What stage we are at now

The scoping work we have done with Wigan has been very positive, with the site identifying a range of challenges that this approach would help with, as well as the benefits of empowering the sector to generate its own knowledge. One participant said: “Evaluation can feel less like ‘doing with’ and more like ‘doing to’” - meaning that the evaluation model has often been defined by researchers and not children’s social care professionals. “This is more about getting more people involved.”
